ABS and traction control lights: causes and costs

The ABS light is one of the most misread warnings on a dashboard. It doesn't mean your brakes have failed — press the pedal and the car still stops the way it always did. What it means is that the anti-lock system has switched itself off, so in a panic stop or on a wet road, the wheels can lock and you lose the ability to steer while braking.
That's why it's easy to live with for months and expensive to live with once. It also explains the thing that confuses people most: the ABS and traction control lights usually come on together. Both systems read the same four wheel speed sensors through the same control module, so a fault that blinds one blinds the other. Traction control and stability control are built on top of ABS hardware — when ABS drops out, they drop out with it.
Below is what actually causes it, what each repair runs, and how to keep a $150 job from being quoted as a $1,200 one.
First: which lights are on?
This is the single most useful thing you can tell a shop, and it changes the urgency completely.
- Amber ABS light alone, or ABS + traction control — anti-lock and traction control are off; normal braking is unaffected. Drive gently, leave extra following distance, and get it scanned soon. Not an emergency.
- Amber ABS light + the red BRAKE light — treat this as stop driving. The red light means low fluid, a leak, or a master cylinder problem, and the combination usually means the system has also dropped electronic brake-force distribution. That's the function that keeps the rear brakes from locking before the fronts under hard stops. A pedal that feels soft, sinks, or needs pumping alongside those two lights is a tow, not a drive.
- Traction control light alone, with ABS off — that's a different problem, and it's usually an engine fault rather than a brake one. See the section on it further down.
- Traction control light flashing while you drive — that's not a fault at all. It means the system is working — it's cutting power because a wheel is slipping. It should go out once you're back on grip.
What actually causes it
A failed wheel speed sensor — the common one
Each wheel has a sensor reading a toothed ring that turns with the hub. They live in the worst place on the car: down in the wheel well, in the spray of road salt, water and brake dust. They corrode, their wiring chafes where it flexes with the suspension, and their connectors fill with moisture.
This is the most frequent cause by a wide margin. The tell is a light that appears at a consistent speed — often around 10–25 mph as the system first checks the sensors — or one that comes and goes with weather.
- One sensor, replaced at an independent shop: commonly $120–320, with most mainstream cars landing in that band. Difficult-access sensors, or luxury and European models, run $300–500+.
- The part alone is $40–250 depending on aftermarket versus OEM, with labor typically $60–200 on top.
Two things worth pushing back on. First, shops sometimes propose replacing all four sensors. Occasionally that's fair on a salt-belt car where they're all the same age and all corroding — but it should be a conversation, not a line item that appears on the invoice. Second, the fault code names the circuit, not always the part: a good technician checks the connector and the wiring before condemning the sensor, because a corroded plug is a much cheaper fix.
A damaged tone ring (reluctor ring)
The sensor is only half the pair. It reads a toothed ring, and if that ring is rusted, cracked, or has lost teeth, the sensor reports nonsense and you get the same lights — with a brand-new sensor that tests fine.
The ring itself is cheap, $15–80. The cost is entirely in where it lives: on some cars it's pressed onto the hub or built into the wheel bearing, which means the labor is the bearing job. If you've already had a sensor replaced and the light came straight back, this is the first thing to ask about.
The steering angle sensor, or its calibration
The stability control system needs to know where you're pointing the wheel to compare intent against what the car is actually doing. When the steering angle sensor fails — or simply loses its calibration — the module disables traction and stability control, and often ABS with them.
The detail that saves people money: an alignment, a steering rack repair, or sometimes just a battery disconnect can knock the calibration out. If these lights appeared right after suspension or steering work, say so. A recalibration with a scan tool is a fraction of a replacement.
- Recalibration only: usually a short scan-tool procedure, well under an hour of labor.
- Sensor replacement: commonly $200–750, with most cars $300–600 and luxury models past $1,000.
Low brake fluid, or air in the system
Low fluid can trigger the ABS light on its own — and low fluid is rarely just low. It's either a leak or worn pads letting the caliper pistons extend further, which drops the reservoir level. Air in the lines, often after brake work done without a proper ABS bleed, does the same thing.
- Brake fluid flush / full bleed: $70–150 at most US shops, averaging around $100. Cars needing an electronic ABS bleed with a scan tool — common on European makes — run up to $180. Dealers routinely quote $150–300 for the identical job.
If the fluid is low, topping it up is not the repair. Find out where it went before you do anything else.
A blown fuse, bad relay, or corroded ground
Cheap and genuinely common, especially on older cars or after a battery replacement. The ABS pump draws serious current, and low system voltage alone can set these lights — which is why a weak or dying battery sometimes shows up first as an ABS warning. If your battery is on its way out, sort that before chasing anything expensive.
The ABS module itself — the expensive one
The ABS control module (also called the EBCM, or the hydraulic control unit when the pump is attached) is the last thing on this list for a reason: it's the least likely cause and by far the most expensive.
- Replacement: commonly $800–1,300 all-in, with parts dominating the bill — the module alone is often $600–1,000+, against roughly $160–235 of labor. Some vehicles run past $2,000.
- Rebuild / repair services, which refurbish your existing unit rather than replacing it, run $100–300 plus removal and reinstallation labor. On an older car, this is worth asking about explicitly — most shops won't offer it unless you do.
A new module usually has to be programmed to the vehicle, which needs manufacturer software. That's the one part of this job where a dealer or a well-equipped independent has a real advantage over a small shop.
When only the traction control light is on
If traction control is lit but ABS isn't, the braking hardware is probably fine and the problem is on the engine side. Traction control works by cutting engine torque, so it needs the engine to be predictable — and when it isn't, the system switches itself off.
The usual causes are a misfire, a failing throttle position sensor, a dirty mass airflow sensor, or an intake leak. A misfire in particular can read to the system as wheel slip. Getting it diagnosed without overpaying
A generic code reader won't find this. The free scan at a parts counter reads engine codes over the standard port; ABS and stability faults live in a separate module and need a scan tool that can talk to it. This is the most common reason people are told "no codes found" while the light is still on.
So the first ask is specific: "can you pull the ABS module codes, not just the engine codes?" If the answer is no, that shop can't diagnose this. Expect a diagnostic fee, and ask upfront whether it's credited toward the repair — most independents do.
Three things that make the diagnosis land the first time:
- Note when the light appears. At a set speed every time? Only in the wet? Only on cold mornings? Right after you brake hard? Speed-dependent points at a sensor; weather-dependent points at wiring or a connector.
- Say what work was done recently. Brake job, alignment, wheel bearing, battery replacement, a pothole hit. Every one of those has a specific, cheap failure mode attached, and mentioning it can turn a parts-swap into a recalibration or a reconnected plug.
- Ask what the code actually said before authorising a part. "C0035 — left front wheel speed sensor circuit" tells you the circuit is at fault, not that the sensor is. The difference between a corroded connector and a new sensor is real money, and only one of them fixes a light that keeps coming back.
On the cheap end of this list, an independent technician is straightforwardly better value — the diagnostic work is identical and the labor rate is materially lower, typically $60–120/hr against a dealer's $100–180/hr. The one case for the dealer is a module replacement needing factory programming, or a car still under a powertrain or emissions warranty — though it's worth checking any open recalls on your VIN first, since ABS components have been the subject of plenty of them.
