TPMS light on: causes and costs

The tire pressure light is the warning people are most likely to ignore and most likely to be overcharged for, and those two facts are related. It looks trivial — an exclamation mark in a horseshoe — so it gets left on for months. Then it turns into a shop visit where four sensors get quoted at once, and nobody in the conversation is sure which parts were actually necessary.

Almost every car sold in the US since the 2008 model year has this system, because federal rule FMVSS 138 requires it. The rule also defines exactly when the light comes on: when one or more tires drop 25% or more below the placard pressure. That threshold is the single most useful thing to know about the light, and we'll come back to it — it means the light is a late warning, not an early one.

Here's what actually sets it off, what each fix costs, and the one detail on your dashboard that tells you which conversation you're about to have.

First: is the light solid, or does it flash?

Look at the light in the first minute and a half after you start the car. This distinction is built into the federal standard, and it separates a $0 fix from a $100+ one.

  • Solid from the moment you start — at least one tire is genuinely low. This is the system working. Put air in it.
  • Flashing for roughly 60–90 seconds, then going solid and staying on — that is the malfunction signal, not a low-pressure signal. The car is telling you it has lost contact with a sensor, or a sensor is reporting nonsense. Inflating the tires will not turn it off, because low pressure was never what it was complaining about.
  • On in the cold morning, off by the afternoon — probably nothing wrong at all. See the temperature section below.

If you take one thing from this article: a flashing-then-solid light is a system fault. People spend weeks chasing air pressure over a light that was never about air. Say "it flashes for about a minute at start-up, then stays on" when you call a shop and you have already given them half the diagnosis.

One caveat — a bad sensor and a genuinely flat tire can happen at the same time. Check the pressures with a gauge either way.

What actually causes it

Tires that are simply low — the common one

Tires lose roughly 1–2 psi per month on their own, through the rubber and around the bead. Nothing is broken; this is just what tires do. Add a nail or a slow leak around a corroded wheel rim and it goes faster.

Because the light only triggers at 25% below placard, a car specced at 35 psi won't light up until a tire is around 26 psi. By then you've already lost fuel economy, added tire wear, and given up some of your braking and cornering grip. The light is the floor, not the target.

  • Air: free to $2 at a gas station, free at most tire shops.
  • Puncture repair (plug + patch from the inside): commonly $20–50. A proper repair means the tire comes off the wheel and gets patched from the inside — a plug jammed in from the outside without dismounting is a roadside fix, not a permanent one.

Set the pressure from the doorjamb sticker, not the tire sidewall. The number moulded into the sidewall is the tire's maximum — usually far above what your car wants. The placard inside the driver's door is the figure the light is measured against.

Cold weather — the seasonal false alarm

Air pressure falls about 1 psi for every 10°F the temperature drops. A car set to 35 psi on a mild autumn afternoon can be near the warning threshold on the first hard frost, which is why tire shops see a wave of these lights on the same cold morning every year.

It's genuinely low pressure — the light isn't lying — but the fix is air, not parts. Check pressures cold, before driving, since even a few miles warms the tires and reads a couple of psi high. And if the light comes on cold and clears once the car has warmed up, that's a tire sitting right at the edge: top it up rather than waiting for it to fail properly in January.

A dead sensor battery — the one that gets expensive

Most cars use direct TPMS: a battery-powered sensor strapped inside each wheel, transmitting pressure by radio to a receiver in the car. Those batteries are sealed into the sensor and cannot be replaced on their own. When one dies, the whole sensor is replaced.

They last roughly 5–10 years, with about seven being typical. So on a car past its first decade, sensors dying one after another isn't a defect — it's the hardware reaching the end of its design life, and it's the most common cause of a flashing-then-solid light on an older vehicle.

  • One sensor at an independent shop or tire shop: commonly $80–180 per wheel, all-in — sensor, mounting, programming, balance.
  • At a dealer: commonly $125–200 per sensor, and full-service quotes frequently land in the mid-$200s to mid-$300s per wheel.
  • All four at once: typically $400–800.

Two things worth pushing on. First, you usually don't have to do all four. If one has died and the rest are the same age, replacing the set is a defensible recommendation — but it should be offered as a choice, with the per-sensor price visible, not printed as a done deal on the invoice. Second, aftermarket programmable sensors cost a fraction of OEM parts and work correctly on most vehicles. Ask which you're being quoted; the gap is often the largest single line on the bill.

A sensor that was never taught to the car — the relearn

After a tire change, a sensor swap, a seasonal wheel changeover, or on some cars a tire rotation, the vehicle has to be told which sensor is where. That procedure is a relearn (sometimes "registration" or "reset").

Some cars do it themselves after a few miles of driving. Some have a button or a menu sequence in the dash. Others need a scan tool that can talk to the TPMS module, which is why a light that appears immediately after tire work is usually a relearn, not a failure.

  • Relearn as a standalone job: commonly $49–71 in labor, with no parts. Many shops fold it into the tire service or waive it entirely.

If the light appeared the day you had tires fitted, go back to whoever fitted them before you pay anyone for a diagnosis. This is their job to finish.

A sensor damaged during tire service

The sensor sits at the base of the valve stem, right where a tire machine works. Broken stems, over-torqued nuts, and cracked sensor bodies during mounting are common enough that there's a standard preventive part for it: the TPMS service kit — a new grommet, valve core, nut and cap, which should be fitted whenever a tire comes off the wheel.

  • Service kit: roughly $5–20 per wheel, though some shops charge toward $20–60.

It's a legitimate charge, and cheap next to the sensor it protects. What isn't legitimate is being charged for kits that weren't fitted — if it's on the invoice, it should be on the wheels.

Aluminium valve stems and steel wheels are also a classic corrosion pair. On a salt-belt car, a stem can seize or snap off years before the sensor's battery would have died.

The spare tire

Some vehicles — a number of trucks and SUVs in particular — monitor the full-size spare. If it's the one sitting low, every visible tire can be perfect and the light stays on. It's a five-minute check that saves an hour of confusion, and it's a genuinely common cause of "I filled everything and it's still on."

Aftermarket wheels, or the wrong sensor

Winter wheel sets and aftermarket rims sometimes arrive with no sensors, or with sensors that were never programmed to your car. Either way the receiver hears nothing from that corner and reports a fault. If the light appeared the same week you changed wheels, that's the cause.

The receiver or module — the rare one

Occasionally the fault is in the car's receiver rather than in any wheel. It's uncommon, and it should be the last thing anyone concludes, after all four sensors have been read with a tool and shown to be transmitting. If a shop reaches for a module before it has done that, get a second opinion.

What if the car has no sensors at all?

Some vehicles use indirect TPMS, which has no sensors in the wheels at all. It works out pressure by watching the ABS wheel speed sensors: a soft tire has a slightly smaller rolling radius, so it turns marginally faster than the others, and the software infers the loss.

There's nothing in the wheel to fail and nothing to replace, which makes it cheap to live with. But it must be reset manually after you set the pressures or rotate the tires, because it has no absolute reading — it only knows what "normal" looked like when you last told it. It's also less precise, and it can miss all four tires going down evenly.

If your car has indirect TPMS and the light is on, the answer is almost always air plus a reset — no parts involved. Worth knowing before anyone quotes you sensors. And because it rides on the ABS wheel speed sensors, a fault there can take the tire monitoring with it; if the ABS light is on too, that's your lead.

Is it safe to keep driving?

For a short trip to a gas station with a tire that's a few psi low, yes — but "the light's been on for months" is a genuinely bad habit, for three reasons.

An underinflated tire flexes more in the sidewall, builds heat, and that heat is what causes blowouts. It also wears its shoulders faster than its centre, which costs you a tire early — if you're seeing uneven wear across the tread, chronic underinflation is one of the usual suspects. And it lengthens your stopping distance and dulls the steering, which is the part nobody notices until the moment they need it.

The exception with no grey area: a tire that keeps going low every few days is a leak, and a leak that gets worse without warning is how people end up on the hard shoulder. Get it looked at rather than topped up.

Getting it fixed without overpaying

The diagnosis here is cheap and quick when it's done in the right order. A shop with a TPMS tool can read all four sensors — their IDs, their reported pressures, and their battery status — in a few minutes. That reading tells everyone which corner is at fault and whether anything needs replacing at all.

Four questions that keep the bill honest:

  1. "Can you read all four sensors and tell me which one is failing?" If the answer is a quote for four sensors before anything has been read, that's the moment to slow down.
  2. "Is this an OEM sensor or a programmable aftermarket one?" Both are legitimate. The price difference is not small, and it should be your call.
  3. "Does my car need a relearn, and is it included?" On plenty of cars it's a few minutes' work bundled into the tire service.
  4. "Is the spare monitored, and did you check it?" Ask before you pay for a diagnosis, not after.

This is a job where an independent shop or a good tire shop is straightforwardly better value than a dealer. The tooling is universal, the parts are widely available, and the labor rate difference — typically $60–120/hr at an independent against $100–180/hr at a dealer — falls straight through to what you pay for identical work. Dealers commonly run 50–100% more on this specific job. The one case for the dealer is a car still under warranty, or an open recall on your VIN.

And before any of it: check the pressures yourself with a $10 gauge, cold, against the doorjamb sticker. A meaningful share of these lights are a tire that wants three minutes of air.
